A WIFE has paid tribute to her much-loved husband who died after being attacked outside a pub.

Spencer Freeman was assaulted early on Sunday near The Grenadier, in Trimdon Avenue, Middlesbrough.

The 42-year-old father-oftwo was taken to The James Cook University Hospital for treatment shortly after midnight.

He died in hospital on Sunday afternoon surrounded by his family.

Last night, a 20-year-old man from Thornaby was charged with manslaughter.

He is to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court this morning.

A 31-year-old man who was also arrested in connection with the incident was released last night without charge.

Mr Freeman’s wife, Michele, said: “Spencer was a muchloved son, husband, father, brother and friend to a lot of people.

“He will be sadly missed by all and will always be in our hearts and thoughts.

“Spencer was a devoted husband and father to Lewis, 15, and to Niamh, who is ten.

He enjoyed sports and played darts and golf. He enjoyed life in general.”

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mr Freeman died as a result of head injuries. It is believed Mr Freeman had been celebrating Middlesbrough’s win against Sheffield United when the tragedy occurred.

Throughout Sunday, friends of the popular dad placed flowers at the scene as a tribute.

Steph Murphy, who works at The Grenadier, said: “He was a diamond. You wouldn’t get a nicer person.

“There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for you. He was a really nice person.”

The area around the pub and part of a nearby shopping parade was taped off while officers carried out inquiries.

Cleveland Police are asking for witnesses to come forward with whatever information they have.

A police spokeswoman said: “Any witnesses are being urged to get in touch with the police if they have not already spoken to them.”
