DETECTIVES have sought to reassure members of the public following two unconnected reports of serious sexual assault in a market town.

Officers are investigating separate allegations in Bedale, North Yorkshire The first complaint, made by a girl in her early teens, relates to an alleged incident about four weeks ago near the town's leisure centre.

North Yorkshire Police say the details are still being assessed, but the alleged assault is believed to have taken place on or after Monday, January 24, between 5pm and 6pm.

The second incident involved a woman in her early twenties, who was reportedly attacked by an unknown male near the Wynd, between midnight and 2am on Friday, during a night out with friends.

Detective Inspector Keith Ruff, of Hambleton and Richmondshire CID, said: "From our inquires into both incidents, I am satisfied that they are not connected.

"Both victims are receiving support from the police as inquiries continue to establish and fully assess the full circumstances surrounding the incidents."

Det Insp Ruff said it is understandable if local residents feel alarmed by the reported incidents, but he stressed that every effort is being made to investigate the complaints and provide a visible reassurance in the local community to reduce any concerns.
