PUPILS crossed swords as part of a new activity being offered at their school this term.
More than 500 pupils at Barnard Castle School have signed up for the latest programme of extra-curricular activities, including fencing with one of the country's leading coaches.
Student Josie Amery, 16, decided to have a go after another pupil recommended the activity to her.
She said: "I like the challenge of trying to prove that I can do it, especially because there are mainly boys in our group. It gives me a really good feeling when I know I can do it."
Students get a chance to try more than 100 activities, including cookery, junior drama, judo, indoor climbing, horse riding and dog walking.
Many of the classes, including fencing, are delivered by professionals who provide expert tuition.
