Getting a good Vibe....

Accolades were presented to more than 700 people from across the borough at the Vibe Awards, held tonight and Monday evening at Darlington Civic Theatre.

The awards, in their 16th year, were held to honour the contributions of people aged eight to 19-years-old.

Among the winners were C:The Box steering group which is a film and TV studio in the heart of Darlington, designed for and by young people.

The group were chosen among others in the contribution to the community.

In the against all odds category, 16-year-old James McElheran was chosen as a prizewinner.

Despite having learning difficulties and autism, James raised the money and joined an expedition to Uganda run by the Christian charity, Through the Roof, where he went to show that disabled young people benefit from education.

Kite surfer Jack Daykin, 15, was chosen in the outstanding achievement to sport category, for cementing his place as national number one in the national under-19 age group.

Catherine Louise Hodgson, 19, achieved four A* and one A grade in her A levels while studying at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, and won in the outstanding achievement in learning category.

Heather Luke won in the contribution to the arts category. The 20-year-old volunteers ten hours a week at Darlington Arts Academy where she uses her talents as a filmmaker to involve young people, passing on information gleaned from her university studies to enhance their understanding.

Cyndi Hughes, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for children and young people, praised all of those involved. "The Vibe Awards give our young people the chance to really shine and showcase their achievements and successes," she said.

"Every year I am amazed at the number of nominations we receive.

"All of the young people put forward for awards give generously of their time and talents to make Darlington a better place.

"Behind each award is a story of hard work, effort and achievement. "It is always heart-warming to hear the story behind the nominations and I feel very proud to be a part of this."
