A HEAD-ON crash resulted in a man being taken to hospital with broken bones following a police chase through a town centre.

A taxi and a car were hit by a Vauxhall Astra which went on the rampage at 11.15pm on Friday night in Middlesbrough.

Four people arrested near the crash scene have been released on police bail.

Officers on routine patrol turned on their lights and sirens when a Vauxhall Astra failed to stop on Kensington Road.

The car, carrying three passengers, was chased down Napier Street, Clive Road and Linthorpe Road before turning onto The Avenue where it hit a passing taxi before ploughing head-on into a Citroen Saxo.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said the driver of the Citroen Saxo was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough suffering from a fractured pelvis and leg.

The driver of the Astra made off from the scene but was apprehended nearby. All four were arrested and taken to Middlesbrough police station.

Inspctor Helen Eustace added: "All four persons arrested have now been bailed."
