THE chairman of the British National Party (BNP) visited the region on Saturday.
Nick Griffin met supporters and party members collecting signatures for the BNP’s Bring Our Boys Home petition, which calls for the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan.
Mr Griffin spent about 30 minutes in Newcastle, Chester-le-Street and Spennymoor, in County Durham, where he met members of the public.
Mr Griffin, who is also a member of the European Parliament, said: “I attended a business meeting in the region on Friday, so I visited a number of stalls in the area on Saturday, talking to our activists.
This is a very important campaign.”
He said the campaign was attracting widespread support and that nationally, about 100,000 signatures had been collected.
He said: “We had a steady stream of people coming up to sign and sometimes we have had queues.
“We have had all sorts of people, including a Liberal Democrat councillor who said ‘obviously I don’t agree with you on a lot of policies, but I agree with you on this’.”
