A TEETERING tower of sandwiches was created by schoolchildren during a visit to a hotel yesterday.

More than 75 children from three primary schools visited the Best Western Derwent Manor Hotel, near Consett, County Durham, and created a five-metre tall mountain of delicately balanced butties.

The event was organised as part of the hotel’s contribution to British Food Fortnight, an annual celebration of homegrown cuisine.

Children from Castleside Primary School, Consett County Junior School and The Grove Primary School, Consett, visited the hotel and made their favourite sarnies, including regular favourites such as strawberry jam, banana, egg and cress and ham and cheese.

Head chef Philip Hall then picked out his favourite, created by eight-year-old Yasmin Kentish, of Castleside Primary.

Her creation of tiger prawns, with basil dressing and watercress will now be sold in the hotel bar for the next two weeks, with all proceeds going to the school.

Hotel general manager Paul Mandeir said: “We wanted to do something as part of British Food Fortnight and thought what could be more British than the sarnie?

“It has been an excellent day.”
