A DRIVER had a lucky escape when her car was hit by a truck as she tried to cross a busy dual carriageway.
The un-named woman was trying to reach the central reservation of the A690 at Rainton Gate, West Rainton, near Durham City.
After emerging from the Low Pittington road, she was heading for the reservation when the lorry struck her car sideways on, pushing it a short distance along the road.
Fire crews were called to cut the woman from the wreckage and she was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham. It is thought her injuries are not life threatening.
A fire brigade spokesman said the driver had been fortunate not to have been killed in the crash, which happened at about 10.45am yesterday.
The rescue tender from Bishop Auckland, a crew from Durham City and a crew from the Rainton Bridge fire station at Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear attended the incident.
