POLICE are investigating an incident during which a man was shot this afternoon.

The unnamed 26-year-old male sustained a gun shot wound in Wensleydale Square, Bishop Auckland, just before 1pm.

It is believed the man, who is thought to live locally, was shot at from a distance.

He was initially taken to Bishop Auckland Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where his condition is described as stable.

The motive for the incident is not yet known.

Two men, aged 26 and 47, who are also thought to live locally, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

They are currently in custody at Bishop Auckland Police Station and Spennymoor Police Station.
