A FIGHT broke out between men brandishing metal poles today in County Durham.

Police were called to reports of a disturbance involving two men at Willington's Kensington Terrace at around 9.45am.

Witnesses say the men had weapons and were in the middle of the road making threats to one another.

The men have been arrested on suspicion of affray and are being questioned by police.

Two cars, belonging to the suspects, were damaged during the incident, which started at the roadside but ended in the middle of the busy street.

Officers say the men, one in his 50s and another in his 30s, are thought to be from the town.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: "I saw a lad punching another lad through a car window and then they were fighting in the middle of the road. "I was driving at the time."

One man, who was out shopping, said: "Everyone was out in the street watching what was happening. "No one could believe it was happening this early in the morning.

"It is the type of thing which happens when the pubs kick out."
