MORPETH Harrier Laura Weightman admits she must conquer her nerves before next week’s World Junior Championships in Canada.

Weightman will pull on the Great Britain vest for the first time in Moncton after narrowly missing out on last year’s European juniors when she clocked the required time in a non-qualification event.

There were no mistakes 12 months on as the 1500m runner destroyed the field at last month’s trials to storm home in 4min 32.55s – having put one foot on the plane with a lightning-quick 4min 14.43s in May.

But the 19-year-old insists she must hit the ground running in North America if she’s to transfer her domestic dominance into the international arena.

“It is going to be my first GB vest, so I am very excited now, but I am sure there will be quite a few nerves as well when I get there,” said Weightman.

“I think it will be important to handle the nerves and make sure I use that energy in the right way and run like I have been running this year.

“I think it is going to be a really good experience with the heats and being away for the whole time and I’m looking forward to it.

“You just have to strike that right balance with making sure you get through the heats and you don’t take any chances, with also making sure you don’t put everything into your heat.

“I don’t think you can plan the race too much because with the 1500m you don’t know how it will unfold.

“But if I can perform as I have been this season then hopefully I will not be too far away from the final and then anything can happen.”
