DURHAM were 20 runs short of the follow-on target with three wickets standing when Phil Mustard, on 39, was dropped by Paul Horton at first slip off Glen Chapple.

Although the Lancashire captain, again bowling superbly, made a mess of Callum Thorp’s stumps shortly afterwards Mustard then took 11 off an over from Tom Smith to take his side to safety.

It also took the captain to his half-century off 86 balls as Durham progressed to 205 for eight at lunch.

The target looked like presenting no problem as Mustard and Ben Stokes comfortably added 50 in the first 55 minutes.

Stokes, whose composure had clearly rattled Jimmy Anderson, then grew over confident and sliced a drive to backward point to fall for 37.

Anderson sent him on his way with a few words, which probably did not amount to “well played”, as they ought to have done.

When Lancashire then went up with a big appeal for caught behind off Smith, with Liam Plunkett on five, Anderson was the last to stop berating the batsman when he was given not out.

Anderson had bowled unchanged for 26 overs, taking three for 72, when Chapple replaced him in one final effort to enforce the follow-on.

He had earlier made way for Sajid Mahmood, who began with a wide and had two no-balls in his first over. He barely improved and it was impossible to understand how the England selectors have shown more interest in him than in Chapple.

The visiting captain had Plunkett caught behind then yorked Thorp with a ball which started outside leg stump.

Durham still needed 11 when Mitch Claydon joined Mustard, but the captain twice ran Smith to third man either side of the lofted straight four which took him to 50. He was on 64 at lunch.
