TONY Blair was asked tonight to appear before a US hearing on the Lockerbie controversy, according to reports.

The former prime minister could appear alongside ex-foreign secretary Jack Straw who has been invited to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting to discuss the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi.

US senators want to investigate suspicions that oil giant BP may have had a hand in the affair.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is headed by one-time presidential candidate John Kerry.

Announcing on July 15 that the hearing was to be held, Mr Kerry said: "The bombing of Pan Am 103 was an unforgivable act of terrorism in which 189 Americans lost their lives.

"On behalf of those victims and their families, we must get to the bottom of what led to the mistaken release of the only person ever convicted for that terrible crime."

The 17-member committee is responsible for overseeing the US governments foreign policy agencies and reviewing legislation relating to US foreign policy.
