A WORLD War Two bomb was discovered in the River Foss, near York tonight.

The munition, believed to have been dropped by an aircraft, was discovered due to the low river levels.

It was located on the Towthorpe Road, between Strensall and Haxby.

Insp Vicky Taylor, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "A member of the public reported to us that they could see what they thought was a mortar bomb in the river.

"Due to the river levels being relatively low at the moment the fins were sticking out."

An officer confirmed the sighting and the bomb disposal team from Catterick Garrison attended.

"It was safely detonated at approximately 9.30pm," she said.

The road was closed, but reopened later.
