AN MP who lost her seat at the General Election could make a £150,000 profit from the sale of her second home.

Vera Baird was ousted as Redcar’s representative in May, but despite promises to stay in the region and fight to regain her seat, she has put her four-bedroomed house on the market.

The spacious detached house in Oak Road, Redcar, east Cleveland, has been put on the market for £315,000.

When the former Solicitor General bought the property nine years ago, she paid £113,000.

During her time as the Labour MP for the town, Ms Baird designated the house as her second home, allowing her to claim tens of thousands of pounds in maintenance and repair bills on expenses.

She named a flat in London as her main home.

Under Commons’ expenses rules, Ms Baird is now free to sell the Redcar property. If the house is sold for its asking price, she would make a profit of £145,440 after capital gains tax.

There is no suggestion Ms Baird has committed any wrongdoing or breached expenses rules.
