£464m Wynyard 'super hospital' axed in Government cuts

A £464m project to build a new hospital in the region was cancelled today, after the Con-Lib government decided it could no longer be afforded.

The Wynyard Park project, north of Stockton - to replace outdated general hospitals in Hartlepool and Stockton - is among 12 schemes scrapped immediately, saving £2bn.

Danny Alexander, the new chief secretary, told MPs that only projects that were "affordable, offered value for money and were genuine priorities" would go forward - accusing Labour of going on an irresponsible pre-election spending spree.

Scores of other schemes will go ahead - including, it is expected, major bus improvements across the Tees Valley - with full details to be released this afternoon.

GOOD. Maybe they can now use the £67 million first aid box they call Bishop Auckland Hospital.Lets also scrap the £20 million to be wasted on new doors and windows for Darlington Memorial.

Actually I feel this is good for Stockton and Hartlepool, Both communities campaigned long and hard against this scheme because both well sited hospitals alrerady in use in both towns would face closure.

wynyard is in the middle of nowhere on a highways blackspot that would be diffucult for many people to reach.

You have 2 valid point Steve. However, I'm sure that people would be much happier if they could be convinced that it was on the grounds that "they didn't want it" rather than what I just heard on the radio, in that it was just down to political spite by the new government, one half of which is throwing overboard their ideals quicker that we Amis threw overboard the boxes of tea at Boston.
I'd sooner trus a fox in my grand kids bedroom than any politician!!

Lacey.......please don't bother to reply to my offering, I was replying purely to SS's truethfull appraisal of this news item.

Naa I for once dont think this was political. Darsi's reccomendations went contrary to all public and staff consultation. I attended two of the consultation events and overall no one wanted a new hospital at Wynyard, everyone would have loved a new build in the locations the two hospitals are currently located but not lose two and gain one in the worst possible location.

Why close two recently modernised hospitals sited centrally in both Hartlepool and Stockton with easy access by public transport (or even on foot) With one hospital set in neither town with very restricted access, right next to a major accendent black spot.

I'm not sure about Hartlepools current hospital but the building does not look to be 30 years old. North Tees is slightly older built in the late 60s as a 1400 bed hospital, but cut down to about 500 beds today but with a massive increase in office staff and managers. Only very recently north tees had a new roof put on, extensions, many modifications and all new double glazing costing millions.

Mind you whilst its offices are plush, carpeted and have nice paintings on the walls the wards are MRSA infected, frequently dirty and always overcrowded.

I visited a friend in Hartlepool Steve, and to be honest it seemed to be in top condition. I know that the population didn't want to move, but as to RMSA, the answer is to get back to inhouse cleaning and your old type matrons, of which my husband's mother was once one........believe me, SHE could subdue a hole army division on her own, superbugs would have no chance.

Liam Byrne the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury was moaning in the House of Commons that the cancellation of the new hospital would leave Hartlepool and Stockton without at hospital. The guy obviously didn't do his homework properly because Hartlepool and Stockton will still have their hospitals.
