YOUNG Scott Borthwick did a splendid job as Durham’s makeshift opener when they followed on 280 behind this afternoon.

He was on 21 with Kyle Coetzer on 43 whenTrain stopped play at 3.12 with Durham on 46 for no wicket.

Borthwick was left stranded on 20 in the first innings when last man Chris Rushworth was bowled by Tino Best straight after lunch with the total on 330. Previously wicketless and frustrated by the slowness of the pitch, the West Indian took four of the five wickets to fall today.

The news of Michael Di Venuto, who was unable to resume his innings on 108 this morning, was that he would be very unlikely to bat even in an emergency. But it is hoped that his back problem might settle down in two or three days.
