A REPORT has revealed bickering within a constituency Liberal Democrat party.

The Bishop Auckland Liberal Democrats were investigated in February by party members from neighbouring groups on behalf of the regional party.

It followed disagreement, members “point-scoring” in the media and dissatisfaction with parliamentary candidate Mark Wilkes’ selection.

The confidential report, leaked to The Northern Echo, recommended group meetings be suspended until after May 6 and members undertake training.

Investigations culminated in an explosive meeting at West Auckland.

The report says: “The meeting was difficult to control and what started as fairly calm discussions, began to descend into accusations, refutations and shouting.

“It was clear there are factions within the local party and members who have difficulty putting the long-standing disagreements to one side, even for the good of the party.”

“However, there are other members who are loyal and want to see the matters and the party progress,” it adds.

It acknowledges some members left to become independents because of the problems, including councillors Sam Zair, John Bailey and Pat Jopling.

“They couldn’t run a bath,”

said Mr Zair, who missed out on becoming the Lib Dem’s parliamentary candidate and is now running as a Local Liberal.

The report also recommended those who launch attacks in the media be kicked out of the party.

One particular member’s “unacceptable” behaviour was noted, but their identity was not confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats said: “These disagreements within the Bishop Auckland party have been dealt with internally.

“The party is now moving forward and focused on securing a successful outcome on May 6.”
