A WHEELCHAIR user is doing a sponsored event to raise money for wounded servicemen.

David Malia, 27, from Gateshead, will clock up as many miles as he can along Hadrian’s Wall, in Northumberland, next week.

He will be joined by care staff from Tanglewood Mews, in Stanley, County Durham, who look after him in a supported environment.

Staff and service users of the facility in View Lane Park are doing a week’s worth of activities – including a sponsored swim, diet, a fancy dress event, car wash, cakemaking and a tombola – to support the Royal British Legion’s Help for Heroes campaign.

Michael Bell, company director of Integrated Support said: “They are an amazing group of people and we are hoping everyone will enjoy themselves enormously.”

The week culminates with a ball for staff and service users at the Harperley Hotel, Stanley, on May 8, at 7pm. Tickets
