NEWCASTLE United’s star striker faced magistrates yesterday charged with an assault in a nightclub.

Andy Carroll, 21, is alleged to have been involved in a fight at the Blu Bambu nightclub in Newcastle’s Bigg Market in December.

The footballer, of Dinnington, Newcastle, spoke only to confirm his name and to say he understood the conditions of his bail during the short hearing at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court. He did not enter a plea.

Chairwoman of the bench Yvonne Steam committed the case to Newcastle Crown Court, where Carroll will face a judge for a preliminary hearing on June 2. He was released on conditional bail.

The conditions were that he does not enter the Bigg Market or contact prosecution witnesses.

The 6ft 4in striker, who was voted one of Newcastle United’s players of the season yesterday, was hailed this week by Magpies boss Chris Hughton as “a classic, oldstyle centre forward”.

Carroll’s 19 goals in 41 appearances helped propel Newcastle United to the top of the Coca-Cola Football League Championship and promotion back to the Premier League.
