FUNERAL details have been announced for a former council leader who died last week.

Albert Nugent, leader of Durham County Council from May 2006 to May 2008, died at his home on Friday, April 2, following a long illness.

His funeral will be held at Christ Church, on Station Road, Seaham, on Thursday, April 15, at noon, followed by burial in the churchyard.

Coun Nugent, who was 67, leaves his wife Margaret, 69, five children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Some of his relatives have vowed to continue his fight to save seven Durham County Council care homes from closure.

An inquest into Coun Nugent's death was opened and adjourned yesterday.

He had suffered a stroke, had emphysema, lost his sight and was on oxygen 24 hours a day.
