AN out-going long-standing Labour MP is to stand as an independent in the forthcoming General Election.

Frank Cook yesterday confirmed he is campaigning to be MP for Stockton North, an area he has represented for 27 years.

The 74-year-old was deselected by the Labour party two years ago, but was allowed to see out the term.

“Effectively, I was given a free transfer, but I thought it right to continue to stay on side until the final whistle and this I have done,” he said.

“At the same time, I believe it is right that the decision as to who should represent Stockton North should rest, not with members of one political party, but with each and every constituent.

“That is one of the key reasons I have decided to offer myself for election once more.

The other is that I believe there are key issues which are vital for the future of Stockton North and which I want to see through to completion.

“For instance, I want to ensure that the world-class hospital at Wynyard, for which I have campaigned so vigorously, often against the views of parliamentary colleagues, becomes a reality.

“I also want to ensure that we get the right answer for the future of the Billingham mines, where local people get the chance to decide in a local referendum on the basis not of scaremongering but a proper analysis of what is the best way to put them beyond the grasp of the nuclear industry.”

He added: “I am relishing the prospect of a campaign in which my single priority will be fighting to get the best possible deal for Stockton North.

“I hope the people who matter most, the constituents, will give me the chance to continue fighting on their behalf.”

Mr Cook hit the headlines last year when he was caught up in the expenses scandal after it was revealed he had claimed for a £5 church donation.

He later said it was submitted by accident, but was forced to repay some claims relating to his second home.

A spokesman for Labour North said: “Mr Cook was deselected by his local Labour Party members who have chosen Alex Cunningham as their candidate for the election.

“In Alex, local party members have chosen a hard-working local councillor and campaigner with a track record in delivery who will stand up for local people in Stockton North.”

Other Stockton North candidates include Ian Galletley (Conservative), Philip Latham (Liberal Democrat), Mark Michael McKenzie (Independent), Gordon Parkin (UKIP) and Ian Saul (English Democrats).
