POLICE searching for a missing 34-year-old woman have recovered a body from the River Ouse in York.

The body was recovered from the Skeldergate Bridge area of the city at about 11.30am today.

Although the body has not been formally identified, it was discovered some 200 yards from the home of Mandy Bishop, who has not been seen since late last month.

Teams of officers cordened off a half-mile stretch of the river bank at as the body was recovered from the water by two police divers.

Five police vans and a team of 15 officers sealed off the area as shocked passers-by looked on.

Underwater search and rescue teams have been searching the river for three days for the 34-year-old agoraphobic, who was last seen on March 22, having previously not left her house for 13 years.

Miss Bishop, who is the sole carer for her cancer-stricken mother, Valerie Bishop, was reported missing by a family friend at 1pm last Saturday.
