A supplier has recalled face paint after a nine-year-old England fan suffered a painful reaction, Trading Standards officers said today.

James Laing, from Thornaby, Stockton, broke out in spots and swelling the day after England's opening World Cup match against Paraguay.

It is believed the red paint led to an allergic reaction on his cheeks, which caused irritation and scratching.

His mother Melanie took him to see his GP, and he was prescribed soothing cream, but he still has blemishes and he has missed two days of school.

Supplier, Pierre Farber International Limited, recalled the brand whilst it awaits the results of independent testing.

David Kitching, Stockton Councils Trading Standards and Licensing manager said: "Officers have discovered the packs on sale at several outlets in the area and I welcome the precautionary measure to remove them from sale."

The face paints were on sale for around 99p, carried a product reference number E57 and batch codes 204119, 204217, 204180 and 204524A.

A dedicated telephone line has been set up for their Product Support Team on 0161 7270755.
