A FACTORY worker who is between jobs is preparing for the longest cycle ride of his life, in aid of charity.

Dean Laing, 31, of Gilesgate, Durham, plans to cycle 2,500 miles over five weeks - twice the distance of Land's End to John O' Groats.

Mr Laing will be raising cash for the Treetops Children's Ward at the University Hospital of North Durham.

He will be cycling from Durham to Devon on a leg of his trek in which he will cover about 400 miles, before pushing on to Lands End.

Not content with that distance, he will then cycle to John O' Groats before returning home.

Mr Laing said: "I thought, everyone cycles from John O' Groats to Lands End, so I would do something different - and cover twice the distance."

Mr Laing, who will be unsupported and will be camping along the way, plans to set off on July 14.
