THE organisers of a charity walk are hoping the scenic route will encourage people to pull on their boots and enjoy the view.

The route for this year’s Diabetes UK Great North Walk is a slightly more challenging one than usual, but rewards the walker with some of the best views in the North of England.

The event is based around the Guisborough area, in east Cleveland, and starts in the shadow of famous regional landmark, Roseberry Topping, before offering people the chance to tackle the summit.

A spokeswoman for organiser Nova International said: “Clearly, the views from the top of the region’s ‘little Matterhorn’, Roseberry Topping, are well known, but will be a surprise for those who have not experienced them before.

“With most of Teesside laid out before the viewer in one direction, the walker can swing through 360 degrees and not only enjoy views across the North Yorkshire Moors, but specifically see in the near distance the bulk of another major view point which will be reached later on the route, in the form of Highcliff Nab.”

The route, which starts and finishes at the Guisborough Forest and Walkway Visitor Centre, in Pinchinthorpe, makes its way to Roseberry Topping via High Bousdale Wood and up to the saddle of Roseberry Common.

There, participants face the option of walking up to the summit to enjoy the full experience, or they can opt to tackle an easier route around the hill.

For most of the remainder of the route, decisions are limited to making two small detours off the route to enjoy notable local viewing points – one at Hanging Stone and the other at Highcliff Nab.

With three water stations and medical support stations en route, together with a little musical support the walk will be one to savour in the company of thousands of like minded walkers.

To enter the walk, which takes place on Sunday, June 27, people can either fill in the entry form in today's Northern Echo or go to greatnorthwalk.org
