This week's wine has a deep rich garnet-red colour with a bouquet bursting with ripe blackcurrant and black olive aromas.

On the palate there's soft blackberry fruit and spice with a lingering finish. The wine is 13% alcohol which balances the its acidity and fruit. This is a full-bodied wine (D on the A to E scale) with soft tannins. It's Ideal to drink with rich stews and red meat dishes.

The provenance of the wine is Napa Valley (Indian for Valley of Plenty) in California.

It's thirty miles long and never more than five miles wide. The vineyards cover 14,000 hectares. Although Napa has only 10% of California's vine acreage, it boasts 1 in 4 of the state's vineries, 200 in all.

The vines for this wine were influenced by the cool air from the Pacific which suits cabernet sauvignon. They've been making wine here since 1880 and because of the varied micro-climates they've been able to create wines from many different grape varieties although their fame rests on chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon.

The latter is the best-travelled red grape and does well all over the world being easy to grow and harvest. In California it gives a richer more full-bodied wine than in Bordeaux, particularly in the Napa Valley. This bottle came from Sainsbury's classic selection and is reasonably priced at £6.99.
