ENGLAND kick-off their World Cup campaign against Paraguay this weekend at the 96.6TFM Darlington Arena.

Admittedly, Steven Gerrard, Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry may miss the competition on Sunday, but 32 junior boys' clubs will be replicating this summer's showpiece at Quakers' football stadium.

The Northern Echo's Local Heroes SoccerSix World Cup Challenge offers the opportunity for 32 under-14s teams from around the region to compete in a competition with a World Cup format.

Each of the 32 competing teams will represent one of the international sides at this summer's real event in Germany. Sunderland Hendon Rovers Reds have been allocated England, Beamish & East Stanley Sports are tournament favourites Brazil and Sunderland Hendon Rovers Blues will play in Argentina's colours.

The teams will also get to play in the colours of the international side they represent with kits supplied by sportswear shop, Miss-Kicks of Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham.

Former World Cup referee George Courtney will referee the final and exPremiership referee Jeff Winter will also be pulling on his boots once again.

Just like the World Cup, there will be eight groups of four teams with the top two in each group progressing to the knockout stages.

The winners of The Northern Echo SoccerSix World Cup Challenge will be invited to the prestigious Local Heroes Awards ceremony at Hardwick Hall on November 30. The awards ceremony celebrates grassroots sports in the region and is supported by sporting celebrities from around the region.

Gary Doig, npower's community involvement manager for the north east, said: "With only days to go npower would like to wish all the teams taking part in be The Northern Echo's Local Heroes SoccerSix World Cup Challenge the very best of luck.

"The qualities of dedication, commitment and enthusiasm which will be required by teams competing in the SoccerSix are the same qualities that npower recognises and displays in its approach to working with the community.

"The day will doubtless provide heaps of entertainment for the players and spectators alike and I'm sure Jeff Winter and George Courtney will ensure all the games are played within the spirit of the tournament."
