Shay Given will win his 76th Republic of Ireland cap when Steve Staunton's side face Chile in a friendly at Lansdowne Road this evening, and the Newcastle goalkeeper has insisted he did not even consider leaving St James' Park at the end of next season.

Given signed a new five-year deal with the Magpies earlier this month, finally putting pay to rumours suggesting he was hoping to negotiate a move away from Tyneside with his previous contract coming to a close.

The 30-year-old claims nothing could be further from the truth, and remains confident his ambitions will be fulfilled with Newcastle.

"I wasn't tempted to see out the final year of my contract at Newcastle and see if any clubs came in for me," said Given. "I've been at Newcastle nine years now, I'm settled there and I think if somebody wanted to buy me then they would have.

"I get the sense now that Newcastle is my home. I have committed to another five years and I cannot see myself playing anywhere else to be honest.

"This new contract keeps me going until I'm 35, although I'll play a few more years after that.

"With the right backing, I'm sure we'll get in some new players in the summer. There's no reason why we cannot push on.

"And, as I've said from day one, I want to win some trophies at Newcastle."

Gary Breen has also been named in Ireland's starting line-up despite being released by Sunderland last week.
