A MAP in needlework detailing the area of Thirsk has gone on show .

Thirsk Town Council handed over Thirsk Parish Map to go on permanent display in St Mary's Church.

The map measures nearly 20ft and is located in the south aisle of the church, in Kirkgate.

The Reverend Richard Rowling said: "It is a beautiful piece of work, which looks as if had been designed specially for its new location."

The map is made up of four panels of textile work and was created between 1987 and 1989.

It was made by nearly 300 people from clubs and societies in Thirsk, Sowerby, Carlton Miniott and South Kilvington.

In 1989 it won a certificate of merit at the North Yorkshire Village Ventures Competition.

It can be viewed daily at St Mary's Church between 10am and 4pm.
