A TOWN'S leaders fear it could be wiped off the motorway map when a multi-million pound project is completed.

Fears are increasing that tourism and businesses in Masham, near Ripon, could be badly hit when the direct link from the A1 is removed by the motorway scheme.

At present, Masham has a direct route sign-posted from the old A1 taking drivers through Nosterfield to the market town.

Under new proposals, the old route will be replaced by access from Baldersby or Leeming.

"The danger about that is Masham will not get the traffic which now comes to us on its way to the Yorkshire Dales. This could have a very serious effect on our tourism and businesses," said Flo Grainger, vice-chairman of Masham Parish Council.

She raised the issue at the latest meeting of the parish council.

"It could be three years before this happens, but it will be too late to alter things unless we object now. Once the new signs have gone up it will be very difficult to get Masham's name back."

Only recently, Masham-shire Association of Tourism and Trade published a 27-page directory underlining the importance of expanding businesses and growth in tourism.

Coun Grainger also believes the town's disappearance from the new motorway would have an impact on other villages in the area.

County Councillor Paul Richardson is backing the plea to keep the community well and truly "posted."

He urged people concerned about the threat to Masham's sign to attend a Highways Agency exhibition of plans and detailed proposals, scheduled to take place at the Leeming Motel on April 7 and 8 or and at the Scotch Corner Hotel on April 28 and 29.

An official of the Highways Agency, in Leeds, promised to look into the issue.
