A VILLAGE'S recreation area is to be transformed into a play area.
The attraction, in Trimdon Station, will provide a range of activities, including a ball court with hard surface, a large spacenet climbing frame, tube slide and a large swing for juniors. There will also be a specially dedicated area with equipment for toddlers.
Also included will be a grassed area and picnic area and nature pathway.
The scheme was approved by members of Sedgefield Borough Council's development control committee last week.
Residents presented seven letters and a petition with 13 signatures against the proposals. Many felt that parking was not catered for and would cause congestion in nearby Skerne Avenue. Worries about noise and privacy were also raised.
As well as the objections, the council received 17 letters of support saying that the site had been designated as a play area since 1972 and that the lack of facilities on the park had led to children playing on the streets.
Charlie Walton, council head of planning services, said: "There was a full and frank debate and, in the end, it was felt that the scheme would enhance the area and on balance was a good idea."
