Music legend Sting is to receive an honorary degree from his home-town university.

The former Police frontman, who has gone on to achieve recognition as a solo artist and environmentalist, will receive an honorary Doctorate in music (DMus).

The Geordie rocker, 54, will receive his award at a ceremony at Newcastle University on May 5, where he will be conferred by the university's chancellor Lord Patten, former governor of Hong Kong.

Sting - real name Gordon Sumner - has travelled the world during his career.

Among his achievements include his success in raising awareness of the decline of the South American rainforest and highlighting the plight of millions of Africans affected by famine.

He has also notched up an impressive list of entertainment awards including 12 Grammys and a Golden Globe.

Newcastle University's Registrar, Dr John Hogan, said: "With the award of an honorary degree, the University seeks to recognise individuals who through their supreme talent, academic endeavour and dedication to their chosen cause have achieved successes that are an inspiration to us all."
