A SERVICE to help victims of domestic violence has re-launched its advice circle to give support to people in need.

The circle, run by Darlington Domestic Violence Forum (DDVF), helps provide multi-agency support to men or women who suffer physically or mentally at the hands of a partner or family member.

It provides confidential emotional and legal support, bringing the services of up to 13 agencies to the victim.

The service is run at SureStart, in McNay Street, Darlington, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 11.30am, but the times can be flexible.

Anyone who needs help, support or advice outside of those hours can contact the group to arrange a more convenient time.

DDVF also offers its services to people who live in south-west Durham, and work in partnership with bodies including Durham Police, Darlington Primary Care Trust, the Citizens Advice Bureau and Clark Willis solicitors.

Dee Wastenedge, a DDVF volunteer, said the advice circle was a crucial part of the service it offered.

"We found that, on average, a victim would travel around 13 agencies to find the best help available for them. I think most people would give up and go home," she said. "We wanted to get rid of that, and at the forum with the advice circle, we can bring all the key people and agencies together.

"SureStart is a lovely place, and it's a safe place for people to go - some victims are followed, but if they come here, no one need know why.

"We really want to help get the message across that domestic violence is not okay, it is a criminal offence.

"We can help to provide support and help with victims' confidence, and hopefully start to empower them a bit."

As well as the walk-in surgery times, DDVF has an advice line on (01325) 487718.
