A WOMAN was being questioned by detectives last night after a man died of a knife wound.

Police said the 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder after the death was discovered yesterday.

An ambulance crew and police officers were called to a mid-terrace house in Beechdale Close, Station Town, near Peterlee, in County Durham, shortly before 2am.

Ambulance personnel treated a 46-year-old man in the house for the injury he suffered before he was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Hartlepool.

A spokesman for Durham Police said that, despite the efforts of specialist medical staff at the hospital, the man died at 4am.

He said: "A 27-year-old woman was arrested by police at the house on suspicion of murder. She was taken to Peterlee police station where she continues to be held for questioning."

He added that the name of the dead man would not be released until his relatives had been informed of his death.

The man leading the investigation, Detective Superintendent Andy Reddick, said a Home Office pathologist was due to carry out a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the man's death.

And he appealed for people who heard or saw anything suspicious in or around Beechdale Close, on Saturday night, or in the early hours of Sunday morning, to contact his officers.
