GRANTS have been handed out to six young musicians to help them achieve their musical ambitions.

The awards, ranging from £100 to £300, were granted through the Preston Simpson Scholarship in Music Awards scheme, administered by Hartlepool Borough Council.

Founded in 1918, the scheme aims to help local musicians to advance their education and promote the study of music throughout the borough.

The recipients include singer Adam Green, pianist Gary Connor, guitarists Jonathan Gilbraith, Tom Anderson and Joshua Sowden, and clarinet player Samantha Ward.

Councillor Bill Iseley, who is chairman of the awards scheme, said: "The Preston Simpson scholarship scheme has helped numerous local people over the years to achieve excellence in music.

"The grants are a big help because they can be used for things such as buying better musical instruments and towards tuition fees."

Businesses supporting the scheme this year include Gus Robinson Developments, Huntsman Tioxide, Hereema Hartlepool, Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, Howarth Clark, Whitehill and Boots the Chemist.

Gus Robinson said: "I am proud to be associated with the award scheme, which helps local musicians achieve their full potential."
