POLICE have appealed for witnesses to an arson attack at a block of flats.

A police spokesman said the blaze at Hexham House, Walker, Newcastle, between 8pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday, originated at two points in the building.

The first was in a rubbish chute on the ground floor and, at about the same time, a second fire was found to have been started in a storage cupboard on the tenth floor.

This caused extensive damage to the tenth floor landing and smoke damage to the flats. The fire service attended, quickly preventing serious injuries.

There is no known motive for the incident and inquiries are continuing.
