A CHIEF Constable behind a drive to curb drunkenness urged revellers to enjoy New Year celebrations tonight, but in a safe manner.

Northumbria force chief Mike Craik said his officers will be out in numbers trying to quell disorder on the streets of town and city centres either side of midnight.

As part of the force's festive "Don't Spoil the Party" campaign, his officers have been ordered to take a firm line with any drinkers getting out of hand tonight.

He Craik said: "We want everyone to enjoy the party season and have a fun New Year, but in a safe way.

"We want people to feel confident they can come and have a good time without being threatened by the yobbish behaviour of a few people who want to spoil the party for the vast majority.

"Officers will take firm action against anyone who gets drunk, gets violent or disorderly.

"We have the powers to lock people up who behave in this way."

He added that offenders could also face an automatic £80 fine.

Police have been making regular visits to licensed premises across the force area to support licensees and make sure premises are well run.

Those allowing disorderly behaviour on the premises risk having them closed almost immediately under new powers given to the force under recent licensing legislation.
