HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned to be extra vigilant when they dispose of the trappings of Christmas in order not to be the victims of seasonal thieves.
All packaging should be kept hidden until refuse collection day or taken directly to the tip, say crimefighters in the Hambleton district.
And all traces of identifiable names and addresses should also be removed to avoid giving thieves any help.
"Advice regarding security in the home before Christmas has already been issued," said Hambleton Community Safety Partnership officer, PC Izzy Wilkinson.
"But it is paramount that people remain vigilant all the time - and especially after the presents have been opened.
"Please think carefully about advertising the gifts you have received in your house - do not leave the packaging outside for everyone to see.
"Either keep it indoors until your refuse collection day, or visit the local tip and dispose of it there."
