Thanks have gone out to Darlington branches of bakery firm Greggs after they made contributions to a homelessness project.

The firm has been supporting the In From The Cold scheme, which was launched earlier this week.

The scheme is run from the basement of Grange Road Baptist Church, in the town, where accommodation for homeless people will be available every night until mid-March.

Churches are working alongside the borough council and local businesses to run the initiative.

Bridget Chapman, who is helping with the scheme, said: "When I picked up the first batch of food, I could hardly carry it all.

"I don't know how long Greggs can continue to help, but each day they do is a bonus."

* Below Zero, the Darlington-based First Stop charity's scheme which aims to help the town's homeless during the winter months, will receive £750 which was raised thanks to a concert given by chamber choir Pro Nobis in St Cuthbert's Church earlier this month.
