POLICE are appealing for information following a spate of vandalism at an industrial estate.

Telephone lines were damaged at the Grorud Engineering plant on Castleside Industrial Estate, near Consett, between 6pm Tuesday night and 8am yesterday.

PC Ruth Taylor said it appeared someone had climbed on to the roof of the building, pulling the lines down in the process.

She said: "There have been a number of incidents of criminal damage at the engineering premises during the past 12 months, particularly since October, when nights began getting darker earlier.

"Windows have been smashed, lights broken and empty pallets set on fire. We believe those responsible are children who tend to congregate in the area.

"The latest damage was probably done between 6pm and midnight and I would urge anyone who has any information about who was responsible to contact police."

PC Taylor said police patrols in the area have been stepped up and youngsters found making a nuisance of themselves would have their names taken.

Consett police can be contacted on 0845 6060365.
