A North-East doctor will face a number of misconduct allegations when he comes before a Fitness to Practice Panel on Monday.

The Manchester-based panel will inquire into allegations that Dr Nirmal Sharma, while engaged by Primecare Services in Seaham, County Durham, between December 1998 and July last year to provide GP deputising services, obtained controlled drugs through Primecare.

Northumbria Police earlier carried out a review of records relating to patients seen by Dr Sharma and it is alleged that in the course of their investigations they were unable to account for a certain number of drugs.

It is alleged that Dr Sharma did not maintain a register of controlled drugs and did not make any adequate record of the controlled drugs he had administered.

It is also alleged that while working as a locum doctor at the Marlborough Surgery, in Seaham, he issued NHS prescriptions to patients who were not registered with the surgery.

It is finally alleged that Dr Sharma's conduct was "inappropriate, irresponsible, a breach of good medical practice, dishonest and below the standards to be expected of a Registered Medical Practitioner".
