BUSINESS tycoon Sir Richard Branson yesterday said he was confident ntl would return with a higher offer for Virgin Mobile after independent directors rejected an £817m approach.

Sir Richard said he would be very surprised if a deal was not done and indicated the group could fetch an extra £25m.

He said: "My gut feeling is ntl will come up and meet whatever figure it is the independent directors are after, if they feel the forecasts are correct, or some sort of compromise will be reached."

The Virgin Mobile board rejected ntl's approach on Wednesday night after consulting its major independent shareholders. It said the offer materially undervalued the business.
