THE rise and fall of the Roman empire will be examined, warts and all, in an evening class in the New Year.
Following the acclaim of the BBC's stark drama series, Rome, Durham Sixth Form Centre is to run an eight-week course, Murder, Treason and Politics.
It will look at the lifestyles, the political intrigue and the violence of ancient Rome and its vast empire. It will also examine the use and abuse of power by some of the most famous and unpleasant men and women who held power in imperial Rome.
The course is on Thursdays, at the centre, off Providence Row and Freeman's Place, from 7pm to 9pm. It will begin with an introductory session on January 19. The course costs £21, or £11 for concessions.
