MAYORS have come together for a pre-Christmas gathering, staged for the first time in a new venue.

First citizens and their consorts from towns, cities and boroughs from south of the Tees to north of the Tyne, took up the invite for a Victorian afternoon tea in Lumley Castle, County Durham.

It was the first time the annual fundraising tea organised by Seaham's Mayor has been moved from the east Durham town, because it was thought the Medieval castle, off the A1(M) at Chester-le-Street, County Durham, was more accessible.

The result was a turnout in excess of 100, featuring scores of mayors in their chains of office, joining Seaham's Mayor, Councillor Edward Bell.

They were entertained by the Unique harmony choir under the direction of Robert Hume.

Proceeds from the event will go to Coun Bell's chosen charities, a range of good causes in the Seaham area.

The event was arranged by choir member Linda Barker and Seaham town councillor Sonia Forster, who said: "It was a change of venue, but I think everyone was impressed with the magnificent setting of the baron's hall at the castle, where the popular banquets are staged."
