ORGANISERS of a series of health events for people over 50 have hailed them a success.

More than 700 people took part in the 50-plus Your Health Roadshows across Sedgefield borough during October and November.

Feedback from professionals and residents who took part in the initiative was so positive that more events are likely to be held next year.

The roadshow was held at community venues in Newton Aycliffe, Ferryhill, Trimdon Village, Chilton and Spennymoor.

Each event was designed to encourage residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and gave visitors a chance to receive a free health check and flu jab.

Specialists were also available to give advice on topics such as diabetes, osteoporosis, diet and lifestyle, managing medicines and coronary heart disease.

The events were co-ordinated by Sedgefield Primary Care Trust (PCT) and the Pioneering Care Partnership, with support from councils and health and safety agencies.

Anne Clarke, non executive director of the PCT, said: "The road shows have not only provided an easily accessible venue for health checks, but also opportunities for older people to expand their horizons both physically and mentally through alternate therapies or by participating in the many other activities on offer.

"There is a real sense of older people feeling valued and being listened to."
