SCHEMES to help alleviate traffic congestion in the market town of Pickering have been backed by councillors.

Stewart Hurst, North Yorkshire County Council's chief highways officer told the authority's Ryedale area committee meeting that the public response to questionnaires about the proposals had been excellent.

Two of the main schemes are to part-pedestrianise the market place on Mondays between 10am and 4pm, which will see traffic banned with limited exceptions - a move which got 82 per cent support, and to make Bridge Street one-way and build wider footpaths to make the narrow road safer for pedestrians.

Other proposals for the town include providing better signing, adjusting traffic signal timings to reduce traffic queues, improvements to bus stops, narrowing road junctions at Outgang Road and Goslipgate where they meet the A170, 20mph speed limits outside schools, banning coaches in Little Barugh Road, and reducing the speed limits on the approach roads to Pickering.
