PERSONAL photographs of boxing legend Muhammad Ali are to be exhibited at a North-East arts venue in the new year.

The pictures, part of a collection by photographer Bill Peronneau, will be on display at Darlington Arts Centre.

The images, which have never been seen before in the region, will be on show in the Myles Meehan Gallery, from January 20 to March 3.

Mr Peronneau lives and works in Northumberland.

The visit to the arts centre, in Vane Terrace, is part of a tour organised by Northumbria University Gallery.

"Bill Peronneau is one of the most exciting and gifted photographers working in the UK today," said Mara-Helen Wood, director of Northumbria University Gallery.

In 1974, the then Philadelphia-based photographer was able to capture personal portraits of the boxer in his prime.

A spokeswoman for the arts centre said: "This collection of intimate, sensitive images captured Ali's private space, where he would centre himself while preparing for important fights.

A preview will be held on January 19, from noon to 2pm.
