STUDENTS took part in a new scheme to brighten up their area yesterday.
More than 100 children from North Road Primary School and St Mark's playgroup planted more than 4,000 bulbs, daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops in Darlington's North Park.
Among the different flower arrangements will be a collection shaped in the number 2005.
Councillor Steve Jones, chairman of Friends of North Park, which organised the planting, said: "We set up in March as Friends of North Park to bring the park back to its former glory. This is just one scheme to encourage the community to get involved."
The friends are working to provide a better park environment including new teen shelters, play equipment and lighting.
North Road headmaster David Ackroyd said the day encouraged pupils to "be aware of their responsibilities in the neighbourhood".
The children will be brought back in spring to see the results.
