A KIDNEY transplant patient has successfully completed his second marathon.

Harry Burrell, 33, had a life-saving kidney transplant operation at St James's Hospital in Leeds almost four years ago.

Less than three years after the operation, he completed the London Marathon in four hours 22 minutes.

Now he has run the New York Marathon in five hours eight minutes.

Mr Burrell, from Harrogate, who hopes to have raised £2,500 in sponsorship for the National Kidney Research Unit, said: "I found it much harder than the London marathon. But that's because of what I did on what should have been a rest day.

"I 'did' New York on foot, making sure I could see all the places I wanted to see in a short space of time.

"Then I thought I might get a good night's sleep. But I was wrong. I have never experienced anything like the constant sound of sirens, which kept me awake most of the night."

For the past few years, his fight back to fitness has involved running in the country lanes around his home, accompanied by his dog Simba, a Leonberger breed which captured a third prize at Cruft's.
